The new millennium brought a jubilant announcement on January 26, 2001. The President of India has honoured two of the "UDCT Diamonds" with Padma Awards: Professor M.M. Sharma with Padmavibhushan and Dr. Anji Reddy with Padmshri.

Professor MAN MOHAN SHARMA is an institution in himself, being the most decorated UDCT alumnus in the country whose lifes mission has been to serve the chemical industry and the profession of chemical science, engineering and technology. He is a knowledge engineer with unparallel record in the annals of chemical engineering and technology. Teaching, research and consultation have been his mantra and he has offered innumerable advices to industry and government on matters vital to the growth of chemical engineering science, education and nation at large. Countless decorations, honors and fellowships have not stopped him from learning new things every day. Whether Moulten Medals of the I.Chem. E. (UK)(1971,77), SS Bhatnagar prize of the CSIR for engineering sciences (1973), Padma Bhushan (1987), Fellowship of the Royal Society, London (1990), Swarn Jayanti Fellowship (1997), or Millennium man of the chemical industry (2000); to cite just a few, he is as humble and inspiring educator and advisor as ever. UDCT has been his Karma Bhumi and Chemical Engineering a Rashtra Karya. MMS the unstoppable chemical engineer has brought international accolades to the Indian Chemical Engineering Profession and the University of Mumbai. He is the only engineer from the university system to be honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the UDCT and the University of Mumbai have benefited immensely from his selfless services for the past four decades.
The Civilian award of PADMA VIBHUSHAN by the President of India on the Republic Day, the 26th January 2001 is a tribute to Professor Sharmas monumental contributions to chemical engineering science and technology, chemical industry and the government on important policy matters for nation building.
The President and the Board of Governors of UDCT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, and the President and the Managing Committee of the Technological Association, UDCT, are immensely pleased and privileged to felicitate Professor MAN MOHAN SHARMA for enhancing the UDCTs image boundlessly.
Dr K ANJI REDDY has revolutionised the business practices in bulk drugs and pharmaceutical industry in India, catapulting his companies, Dr. Reddys Laboratories Ltd and Cheminor Drugs Ltd, Hyderabad, from a turnover of Rs 1.5 crores in 1985 to over Rs. 800 crores during 1999-2000. He has been a pioneer for the manufacture of a number of bulk drugs based on indigenous technology. His moorings in pharmaceutical sciences and technology from the UDCT have helped him to achieve his dream.
Dr. Reddys Research Foundation (DRF), established in 1992, has filed a total of 50 patents with the USPTO and 33 with the PCT, for its discoveries in Cancer, Diabetes, Ulcer and Bacterial infections. DRF has licensed two of its discoveries in the anti-diabetes field for co-development to Novo Nordisk of Denmark, a world leader in diabetic care. He has won several coveted awards like Sir P C Ray Award and the ICMA Export Award, Manager of the Year Award in 1987 by Hyderabad Management Association, Prof. Nayudamma Memorial Gold Medal Award, the UDCT Diamond Award in 1994, Lifetime achievement Award by FAPA, the Pragna Puraskar in 1998 and the Achiever of the Year Award from Chemtech Foundation in November 2000.
Dr. Reddy is a philanthropist and has established Dr. Reddys Foundation for Human and Social Development to act as a catalyst in the management of change. Through this social responsibility of business programme, the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Reddy has promoted investments in entrepreneurship development through micro finance and touched the lives of thousands of rural women and their families and hundreds of street children in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The Civilian award of PADMASHRI by the President of India on the Republic Day, the 26th January, 2001 is a crowning glory to Dr Reddys achievements so far.
